Harebrain – One who is flighty or foolish; crackpot
When I was in high school, I was a dreamer. I was always coming up with business ideas, each one better than the last. I had enough of these ideas that it was easier for my parents to call them all Hare Brain Schemes, or HBS for short. “Oh, that’s just another HBS” is what I’d hear on a rather frequent basis. Along with my overactive imagination, my parents tell me that at some point in high school, I declared that I would never have a job where I had to wear a tie (they swore this was another HBS).
A selection of my harebrain schemes included the following: commercial space flights for tourists; a custom house construction company; stock newsletters for paying subscribers. The coolest one in my mind was the commercial space flights. My friend and I had huge plans with rough sketches of the space craft. We figured the technology existed or would exist in the very near future to make these flights a possibility. We were ready to go into production. We figured our parents could foot the bill for the space craft. I didn’t know Burt Rutan and only thought Virgin was a music company.
Probably to my parent’s great relief, I made it through high school and studied at Penn State to be an environmental engineer. After graduation, rather than work as a respectable engineer for an established firm, I helped start a custom home construction company, Envinity…where I didn’t have to wear a tie.
I tend to get cabin fever when I’ve been in one place for too long. About three years after I helped found Envinity, a new hare brain idea took hold: the idea of owning rental properties. After some initial fits and starts, I decided to start a company to purchase real estate. I was trying to decide what to call my company. I knew I needed something that would make my parents laugh, as real estate investment was not a venture anyone in my family had attempted before. I was racking my brain for a name, and like a bolt of lightning, the name HBS Real Estate hit and stuck.
For me, HBS will work as a great brand name for any of my future…Hare Brain Schemes, and trust me, there are plenty of ideas.
